I’m Jen Magnuson, and yes, I do have a face behind that camera that seems to always be in front of it. In those moments when I set the camera aside, it’s probably to make space for puppy kisses, to look around for the next shot, to navigate the next step on some backcountry trail so I can, in fact, keep that face intact, to make space for a karaoke microphone (I can go from Jimmy Buffet classics to ’80s rap without blinking an eye!), or to take a sip of craft beer or one of the home brews my husband and I make!
I’m a big fan of viewing life through rectangles, the viewfinder on my cameras, the windshield of my trusty old ‘03 Jeep Wrangler TJ, ski goggles, or cycling glasses (as much as I love mountains, I am a roadie at heart when I am on two wheels)!
I’ll take a rainfly over a roof, a sleeping bag over a king size bed, a million star milky way over a 5-star hotel, home dehydrated backpacking meals over gourmet restaurants, and puppies over just about anything.
My guiding principles: No uncomfortable shoes; adopt; don’t shop; go ahead, chase the falling stars; be kind; have fun; the best camera is the one you have with you; always bring the good camera.
Background and Education
I learned SLR photography in the mid-1990s on an old fully manual Nikon that I borrowed from my high school boyfriend. After wandering through a career in politics, law enforcement, bicycle repair, teaching yoga, and coaching triathletes, I found myself. . . no really FOUND myself, behind the lens again.
I graduated from Boston University’s Center for Digital Imaging Arts in 2014 and began shooting with some of the top wedding photographers in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area.
I have since shot for clients including: Race Across America, REI, 6-12-24 Hour World Time Trial Championships, Bike Radar, Business Insider, Richard Branson, the United States Department of Labor, The International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, and the Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association. I also share my passion for photography as an instructor for REI’s Outdoor School in their Colorado market.
I am a contributing photographer to X-Ascent Media and The Aurora Photos Collection at Cavan Images. I serve on the Board of the Colorado Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers, and am a member of Nikon Professional Services.
